It’s all about: Yong Tow Foo, fishball and assorted tofu soup

Yong Tow Foo or Yong Tau Foo is Chinese cuisine which include stuff tofu either with fish paste or mince meat. From what I experienced this dish in Singapore, there are 2 types of Yong Tow Foo. First type is where you can choose what ingredients you want on your plate (for dry) or bowl (for soup). There are variety of food; vegetables, fish cake, fish ball, seaweed, hard boiled egg, tofu and many other choices. Yong Tow Foo is usually eaten with noodles or rice with special pink or red sweet sauce and chilli sauce.

The second type is the one I had. There are only few main ingredients that you don’t have to pick yourself. I went to one of Kopitiam foodcourts. We ordered one Yong Tow Foo without any rice or noodles which had 7 items in the soup; fishball, stuff tofu with fish paste, soft tofu and fish cake wrapped in tofu skin. The other that we ordered was with dry yellow noodles which has 5 similar items in the soup. The best of this dish was the soup which was very flavorful.

    Yo-liciously yours,

It’s all about: simple 4 ingredients fried rice

Usually when I cooked rice, I will cook more than what both of us will eat in a meal. One of the reasons is because if you cook lesser rice in the rice cooker, the rice will burn at the bottom. What I do with the left over rice? I will put in plastic container and keep in the fridge for next day. Overnight rice will be hard and dry so if you just eat it like that, it will not be nice. So in order to enjoy the rice, I will make fried rice.

This is very simple fried rice recipe with only 4 main ingredients.

    This recipe makes 2 portions.

    What you need…

    • Overnight rice
    • 1 onion
    • 1 potato
    • 2 cloves of garlic
    • Soy sauce or salt and pepper
    • Some cooking oil

    How to cook…

    1. Heat the frying pan and put some cooking oil. Once the pan starts to get hot, add garlic and onion. Saute for about 1-2 minutes.
    2. Add potatoes (should be cut into small dices so it will be easier to cook). Stir fry until potatoes are cooked.
    3. Add rice (if it is too dry, add some plain water 1-2 tablespoons). Combine all the ingredients.
    4. Lastly season with soy sauce or salt and pepper. If you have spring onion, just chop and sprinkle on top.

Note: overnight rice is best to make fried rice because no moisture. So your fried rice will not be soggy. I used mixed white and brown rice.

It’s all about: Bluemist at Tanjong Pagar, Singapore

Bluemist Cafe Bistro is usually crowded in the evening as people come to enjoy drinking and chatting after long day at work. However the place also serves yummy meals as well as side dishes.

    Pic1

Cesar salad was fresh with slice cheese on top served with cesar salad dressing. We ordered few side dishes; cheese sticks and truffle fries. The fries were extremely delicious on its own without the dipping sauce.

Freshly made tuna sandwich served with fries was good. The bread was soft inside but a bit crispy outside. This sandwich filled with handful fillings and fresh vegetables like lettuces and tomatoes.

    IMG_1804

Pan fried fish was very well cooked with crispy skin on the other side served with mash potato and vegetables. Mash potato was creamy and flavorful with special gravy.

spaghetti chicken balls was so fragrant with herbs and cheese. The chicken balls were huge and not too dry which went very well with the tomato sauce.

Wagu beef burger filled with juicy meat patty topped with melted cheese, beacon, lettuces and tomato. The burger bread was both sides with black and white sesame seeds.

It’s all about: New Ubin Seafood, local Singapore food

New Ubin Seafood is Zi Char restaurant in Singapore. Zi means cook and Char means fry or stir fry. So Zi Char restaurants usually serve made to order ala-carte dishes at friendly prices. This restaurant started in Pulau Ubin, one of small islands in Singapore then they moved to the mainland but still serving kampong-style seafood.

We had to reserve the table in advance as the restaurant always fully pack with customers. There are variety of dishes inspired by many countries cooked in Singaporean style.

The food was very delicious and there were few recommended dishes on the sign boards around the restaurant. The dish I liked the best was chicken satay or grilled meat on skewers. It tasted amazing with the peanut sauce.

US Black Angus Ribeye Steak and potato wedges came on wooden chopping board. You can have 3 choices of dipping; mustard, ketchup or sea salt.

Another famous dish was Hokkien Mee special, noodles with delicious gravy. We ordered one package home but it was not as nice as we ate at the restaurant because the noodles soaked up all the gravy. Black pepper crab was fresh and black pepper aroma will be on your fingers after you finish the crab. It was not too spicy yet sweet and salty with the special black pepper sauce. The other unique dish was Hong Kong Kai Lan special with crispy herbs on top. We were not sure what was the herbs that sprinkle on top of kai lan but it was so good. Maybe it was secret recipe.

It’s all about: ThaiExpress, Thai restaurant in Singapore

There are many Thai restaurants in Singapore and one of them is ThaiExpress which has few branches around Singapore. We had lunch at one of the branches in NUH. Sa-Nook all-Day set meals are available on weekdays at $8.90++. There are 3 sets; set A – Black Pepper Chicken with Jasmine Rice, set B – Tom Yum Glass Noodle Chicken Soup, set C – Tamarind Fish with Jasmine Rice.

We ordered set A – Black Pepper Chicken with Tom Kha Chicken soup. Tom Kha is similar to Tom Yum but with coconut milk and more kha or galangal flavor. The soup was nice and a bit spicy. It went well with plain white rice. For black pepper chicken, personally I thought it was more like Chinese dish than Thai. The other that we ordered was set C – Tamarind Fish with mushroom Tom Yum soup. Tom Yum soup was ok but a little too sweet and the aroma was still not there yet. I didn’t think that the tamarind fish was Thai dish anyway the taste was good.

We ended the meals with sweet red ruby dessert. Red ruby is named as it looks like ruby. The dessert is made from water chestnuts coated in red syrup then coated few rounds with flour before boiling them. Then it is served with coconut milk and crushed ice.

It’s all about: second round of ovulation pill and first IUI, our infertility journey#10

    Our infertility journey #10

After first attempt of IUI was not done as per plan due to the actual ovulation day fell on public holiday, we tried agian for another round of Clomiphene Citrate 50 mg. My appointment for TOO was on day 13 of my cycle this time because day 12 was on Sunday and the clinic was closed.

I reached the clinic for my appointment at 8.55 am. Prof PC Wong was already back from leave. My really first IUI cycle started:

    • 9 Jun 16 (day 2): took Clomiphene Citrate first day
    • 20 Jun 16 (day 13): TOO follicle 19 mm right and 18 mm left, endometrium 8 mm

The doctor said both follicle and endometrium were at ok size so IUI procedure to be arranged on 22 Jun (day 15). I needed injection of Ovidrel 250 mcg to induce ovulation only at 5-6 pm which will take around 36 hours to ovulate. I was given choices; to have injection at the clinic or to do it myself at home. Thinking about poking the needle onto myself, I already felt fainted. So I chose to come back to the clinic in the evening for the injection. I had 7 hours to kill from 10 am to 5 pm so I went home to take a rest first.

The injection was at the tummy area. The nurse pinched the flesh of my tummy and inject the medicine. It was the same pain when you have vaccination but it was more scary because I looked down and saw the needle going in my tummy. Anyway when I reached home at night, there were small bruises around the needle area which supposed to be normal.

I read that the trigger shot will lead to positive ovulation on the LH test strip. So I tested and all came out positive. It was my first time ever that both lines were the same darkness.

    22 Jun 16 (day 15): IUI

We woke up early in the morning and called cab down to the hospital. Reached NUH around 7.30 am and it was still early so we went for breakfast at Burger King. We ordered 2 breakfast sets; Turkey Sausage with egg and Turkey Bacon with egg croissant. It was the first time I tried Burger King breakfast and I loved the crispy bacon and hash browns the most.

Then around 8 am my husband prepared for his semen and brought to the lab. We waited at the clinic for appointment at 10 am. I had small tummy cramp and lower back pain since morning.

We were called in around 10.30. The nurse went out to get semen from the lab then she explained to us about the procedure since it was our first time IUI. The washed sperm will be injected directly into uterus by small long tube so there is no need to ly down after the procedure. She told us that a lot of patients read too much on the Internet and thought that after IUI must ly down to prevent the sperm to flow out. In fact there is a closure at the end of uterus so there will not be any leakage.

When the doctor came in, he checked the washed sperm count which is good at 86 millions. Then he did vaginal ultrasound, it was painful as I felt so sensitive since my tummy cramp due to ovulation. Both of follicles already ovulated so he injected washed sperm. The procedure was quick and only took around 5 minutes.

    2 weeks of waiting started.

    Yo-liciously yours,

It’s all about: the yummiest laksa in Yishun, Singapore

Laksa is noodle in spicy soup either in curry coconut milk based or sour soup based from tamarind. Singapore is a diverse country with mixture of nationalities so laksa is one of the representative of this mixture; Paranakan cuisine or Chinese + Malay cuisine. You will find laksa in Singapore and Malaysia even southern part of Thailand.

The one in Singapore that I would strongly recommend is at Yishun, northern side of Singapore. This place is not a fancy restaurant but family run HDB shop which is the shop at the void deck of the public housing. This shop is very famous and lots of people are willing to que for a bowl of laksa.

We reached there at around 1 pm on Saturday. There were about 25-30 people in front of us, it was very long que. Queuing in Singapore is very normal and Singaporeans do not mind waiting in the que. The longer the que the better the food, it’s usually true. So if you see any place with long que means the food must be good.

Finally at 2 pm we got our laksa after an hour of queuing. Apparently the que never shorten. Behind us were another 25-30 people in the que waiting for this yummy laksa. There are limited seats but with long que, you will be able to sit after previous customers finish theirs.

You can choose the noodles of your choice: mian (yellow egg noodle), thick bee hoon (white and round rice noodle) and bee hoon (thin rice noodle). In a bowl there are fish cakes, hard-boiled egg, tofu skin, cockles and bean sprouts. Then pour in the yummy  laksa coconut based soup. We didn’t take cockles so instead we got crab stick. You can put curry leaves and curry paste as well.

Trust me once you try this laksa, you will not enjoy much of other places’ laksa anymore.

After the spicy and rich laksa, it will be very refreshing and satisfying to your taste bud with the ice dessert called ice kachang. This is a bowl of very fine shaved ice with syrup, sweet corn and evaporated milk. Underneath the ice mountain, there are red bean, grass jelly and agar agar. Just go to next door shop for this dessert.

It’s all about: full preparation for first time IUI but never proceed, our infertility journey#9

    Our infertility journey #9

We planned for IUI around April but because of my husband business trip oversea we needed to postponed. I was prescribed Clomiphene Citrate 50 mg to be taken daily starting from day 2 till day 6 of menstrual cycle. When my period started, I called in for TOO Time Of Ovulation on day 12 of the cycle to check the size of my follicle.

However prof PC Wong was on leave the week of my TOO and possible ovulation date. So I saw another doctor instead. My first IUI cycle started:

    • 6 May 16 (day 2): took Clomiphene Citrate first day
    • 16 May 16 (day 12): TOO follicle 12.5 mm each side, endometrium 9 mm
    • 19 May 16 (day 15): follicle 16.5 mm right and 18.5 mm left, endometrium 12 mm

You will need to have one dominant egg with the size of 18 mm or more and endometrium of at least 8 mm for the possible fertilization.

The doctor told me that the best date for IUI will be on Saturday (day 17) but unfortunately the clinic is closed due to public holiday. Therefore we needed to forego this round of IUI and try naturally without any ovulation trigger shot.

There are 2 documents needed for IUI; signed consent paper and marry certification.

I did home LH ovulation test which I was not sure again if I was able to ovulate on my own. The test line was not equal or darker than control line for all 3 tests. Anyway we still tried on our own with high hope since I had a dominant egg and my endometrium was good. However at the end of the day, my period started ON TIME!

    Total bill: S$182.34

    1. Clomiphene Citrate 50mg 5 tablets: S$1.34
    2. TOO day 12: S$90.50
    3. TOO day 15: S$90.50

It’s all about: London Street in Bangkok

London Street is located on Phatthanakan Road. The easiest way to come here is by car or taxi. The nearest public transport is Airport Rail Link – Hua Mak station then just take taxi there.

    Pic2

    There are 5 restaurants at London street;

    • MK restaurants: Thai hot-pot with special broth and suki dipping sauce. The other famous dish is Chinese style grilled duck that can be served with rice or noodle.
    • Yayoi: Japanese restaurant with variety of set meals that come in traditional Japanese way of serving and plating.
    • Le Siam: Thai authentic restaurant with delicious Thai food and great decoration representing Thai culture.
    • Le Pitit: cafe inspired restaurant with English high tea set that you can enjoy your afternoon.
    • Miyazaki: Japanese Teppan restaurant which your food is cooked in front of you by the chef.

We had our lunch at Miyazaki Japanese Teppan Dining. There are 2 islands where customers can sit around the hot stove and the chef will cook your food in front of you. We ordered slice pork set, Kurobuta set (Japanese black pig) and shrimp set. Each set came with either white rice or upgraded to garlic fried rice as well as stir fry vegetables in Japanese sauce.

Outside was decorated to resemble Big Ben which can be easily spotted from far. Behind is Tesco Lotus supermarket where you can shop for grocery after your meal.

Inside when you enter, there is British double-decker bus which you can go in and take picture. The decoration will make you feel like you are in London. It is definitely Instragram worthy.
